Deerfield, Ill.-based Meritus Homes is appealing specifically to boomers by offering a semi-custom building process that lets buyers ensure their new home has all the features that are most important to them. The opportunity to customize also complements the fact that many boomers aren’t necessarily downsizing, but rightsizing.

According to the Meritus team, boomers tend to be seasoned homeowners who know exactly what they want and use in a home, so they appreciate being able to add their must-have features to existing floor plans without having to go through the process of building a fully custom home. They company has worked with boomers who have included a three-season porch – for a client who had always had a screened-in porch in every home they owned – sunroom, and a specialty craft room in lieu of a mudroom. Empty-nesters appreciate the flexibility to adjust a floor plan to include a first-floor master suite, or expand a garage to create more easily accessible storage on the first floor.
